Hard Drive Selection

Perhaps the biggest mistake people make when your computer (s) to build hard disk drive (HDD) to underestimate the importance of. In our modern society, large synonymous with better, so when a hard drive, how "big" is, go buy a look at their data potential. But consider that you might need when buying your hard drive?

Like all components of your computer, HDD expansion for far too complicated to describe here in any way, but hopefully this article in order for you to buy your new hard drive when you know what to look for will end.

There are 4 primary aspects a hard drive (in order of importance) to look at:

1. Rotational frequency and average seek time
2. Buffer Size
3. Internal / external transfer rate
4. Capacity

A big selling point of rotational frequency (5400/7200/10000/15000RPM) recently, you too much difficulty finding out what happens when you have your HDD's rotational frequency should not buy it has become. Now of course it spins faster, the faster it can read from the disc (there are also other benefits), but know that it faster, put more wear on the drive, the more likely it spins encounter errors and malfunctions later in life. You are too much hard drive inside your computer that the system (CD-ROM, floppy disk drives and fans also have moving parts, moving parts, but they are all cheap and if they break all the data you will lose your computer owner has accumulated over the course, withdraw your data regularly!).

If you know anything about physics or engineering, then you know that moving parts produce friction and wear, and a faster spinning platter (the part that takes data and spins) means more friction, and therefore more wear on your drive. Of course it can read data faster than the plate faster spins. So what do you do? Again well you backup your data as much as possible and you fast spinning drive money (the purchase 7200RPM ATA device (type you are buying) and 15000RPM SCSI and some Serial ATA devices (you get the Serial ATA to be can get to, depending on your motherboard)). Are thinking of getting a drive on the "7200RPM" Look for the label, it is important!

"Buffer" I'm referring to the transfer buffer that temporarily stores data read from or write to the hard drive. The reason for this is that the bus (hard drive and the motherboard between the data channels) at a time just so can handle information and data for a long time to be found and taken from a plate (random seek time consuming), so this is a very fast data buffer and stores the requested data takes a large part of the bus facility to be sent. with a larger buffer then you just send the request to eliminate gradually to keep the plate without having to find more data to move more data line to Can. some new drive as much as 8MB of buffer capacity to come up with, but it is more common to see 2 or 4MB. Normally a drive with a large amount of a selling point and use as the box / website will print, you can assume that it is a 2/4MB buffer. My advice to you as much as one can get with the purchase.

Now transfer rates for you to find something good, to get to these numbers are going to need you to model specification sheet (for those looking to buy the manufacturer's website and to see that in fact all the information about the best way I have yet to get the point). One thing to watch out that you have something that s / 133MB / s or ATA/133 or SATA150 or 150MB read says, and these numbers for you, are looking hard for those numbers add drives are not just describe the motherboard, and the theoretical peak numbers, which we are told almost nothing. Also, if you are buying a Maxtor, do not bother looking up the actual transfer rate as Maxtor apparently is afraid to release such information. Not to say that Maxtor bad drive, Maxtor actually reached the top in terms of technical support and they pretty much some other companies, which some ridiculously large (10 or 15% of such amount is important since some designed to replace broken drives than hard drives) are either dead on arrival or die within the first few weeks of use. As with the previous two points, see the transfer speed (if you can find them), always with the highest number you can afford to take a try.

Notice that the 4 major aspects of the first three were all related to speed? That was intentional to give you a sense of the importance of speed in the hard drive because they are very slow creatures, and your gaming experience a fast as a much larger hard drive do not need much. Much more you increase the speed of a RAID, which is a network of hard drives that can set (RAID0 mode) share the same part of the data, such as data access 1 / n times (n attached hard drive number =) charges compared to a hard drive. To do this you really need is a hardware chipset, which generally are included on high-end mainboards RAID.

Finally, the capacity is an unnecessary nicety. Small hard drive you can buy today that are still within those higher speed classes are all about 30GB, which are more than enough for your game. But since not all games, and you have to download an iTunes member or anime then you really will want some extra space if. So I recommend getting something between 60 and 120GB is any more, and you are going to be paying through your teeth, any less and you in two years may be looking to buy a supplemental hard drive is. And, oh yeah, Maxtor 300GB hard drive out, but they are relatively slow, so I will not get a recommendation for gaming, I drive to a single plate (usually 40-100GB) to like stick, as they produce less heat and less likely to break on me.

All you really a good choice when upgrading your hard drive or a buy a new computer need to know. Of course if your hard drive within the web at work and want more detail on many other resources.
